- I have successfully used the Sportster 14.4 with my 486/50mhz PC and
- Windows 3.1, and also now Windows 95. However since switching from a
- British Telecom line to a cable phone line I have had endless problems
- with the line dropping on connection to my service provider,
- Compuserve and a Smartterm connection to work. The line drops either
- immediately I get a connection or within 5 to 30 minutes.
-
- My cable company, Cable Corporation, advise getting a Hayes v34 modem.
- US Robotics advise upgrading the firmware, for a price.
-
- I have used a loan modem from the cable company successfully, Im not
- sure what the brand was (is External a brand name?). They report that
- many cheaper modems cause similar problems with their lines, and
- altering the street transmission line settings have no effect. They
- have also taken my modem and tested it in their workshop but have not
- come up with any satisfactory, ie cheap or free, solution to this
- problem.
-
- The current street transmission line settings are set to:
-
- transmit +2.5 dBm
- receive -6.0 dBm
-
- Has anyone else had a similar experience, or can advise on what I
- should do?
-
- Please email/cc any replies to me as this problem makes it difficult
- to download news.
-
- Thanks
